Women of every race, shape, form or aspect are honored during March for Women’s History Month.

On May 5, 10 people were added to the Women’s Wall of Fame, in the Schauerman Library, and will have their photo up for the next two years, Debbie Turano, senior clerical assistant, said in a phone interview.

Darlene Daniels, De De Hicks, Sandra Horwitz, Chris Jeffries, Teresa (Teri) Kuwahara, Amy LaCoe, Jean McMillan, Maureen Ann Reilly, Susan Stolovy and Turano were the 10 people nominated and chosen to join previous winners at the event, according to a tweet of the list from El Camino’s Twitter account.

They will join a list of previous winners, according to the El Camino website.

“I was shocked when I found out,” she said. “It was unexpected.”

Turano had something to say to the people who nominated her.

“Thank you for recognizing the work that I do,” she said. “I’m proud to be seen as an equal to the other woman who (have been) nominated.”

Stolovy, full-time physics professor, said that she was very honored to be in the presence of the women who won before her and was not very prepared to win such an award.

“I was talking to some students of mine from before,” she said. “They said they nominated me for something. Then when the day came for the award, I was teaching class on one side of the campus and then running to the ceremony. I even had to leave early to go teach another class.”

Winning the award also means getting a photo on the Women’s Wall of Fame, and Turano who felt that it was “embarrassing” talked about the process.

“I tried to look presentable,” she said. “But I had fun. It’s good to know the work I do is worthwhile.”

Stolovy believes that it was her teaching that got her the nomination and award.

“Students don’t have to love what they’re learning,” she said. “But it doesn’t hurt if they do. I love teaching a challenging subject, but making it understandable. I think that’s the goal of teaching; to inspire.”
