Administration Building evacuated due to Anthrax scare
An envelope containing a powder caused the Administration Building to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon, EC Police Chief Michael Trevis said.
Around 2 p.m., an EC employee opened a letter that had a “powdery substance” and a note indicating the substance was Anthrax, Trevis said.
Trevis said an initial test was performed and the substance was not Anthrax.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said the substance did not appear to be hazardous and the FBI is continuing to investigate the responsible party.
Eimiller added the letter appears to be linked to similar letters received throughout L.A. County this week.
Trevis said the letter was addressed to the college and not anyone in particular.
The fire department, paramedics, L.A. County Hazardous Material Division, L.A. Sheriff’s Department, and FBI responded to the scene, Trevis said.
“We do take this stuff seriously,” Trevis said. “I have been here a little over five years and this has not happened before.”
