Because EC is an active part of Torrance and the South Bay, a handful of community service clubs thrive on campus. For those that want to give back to the community.
Stephanie Morales is the Inter-Club Council representative (ICC) for Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), an honors community service club on-campus. It focuses on campus, club and community involvement, Morales said.
“We announce certain community projects that are coming up for service points,” Morales said.
It also organizes car washes, and fundraiser events. “Since our club is so big, we usually hear about opportunities for members to help out around the community.”
One of the requirements for membership is to complete at least 10 points for active members and 5 points for inactive members each semester. The point system is broken down by 5 points for social or school involvement, such as attending sporting or fine art events. Members may also receive 5 points for community involvement, which can be anything from helping in their city, church or campus.
AGS is organizing a free car wash on Oct. 23 in front of the Campus Police station. It will be accepting donations, Morales said.
Circle K International, the largest collegiate community-based organization, has a motto that promotes “service, leadership and fellowship” among its members. It works to not only benefit children ages 6 to 13, but also the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as well.
Students may also join the American Red Cross club (ARC), Honors Transfers Club (HTC) and Rotaract (Rotary International).
EC’s ICC will host a blood drive beginning Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Donors will receive a $5 coupon from El Torito Restaurant, two VIP tickets to the Laugh Factory and a chance at a shopping spree. ECC needs as many donors as possible in order to reach its goal of 360 pints of blood, Nick Mitchell, ICC president said.
According to an ARC pamphlet, In the United States, someone needs blood every two seconds. You can save up to three lives by giving just one pint and one hour of your time.
The City of Torrance invited EC student services and its clubs to help out with “Make A Difference Day” on Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will take place at the Madrona Marsh Preserve and will include weeding, cleaning up fallen tree debris & fence painting, according to the event flier.
