Seven saves by goalies Danny Herrera and Blessing Ngwa aided the Warriors in a shutout win against Mira Costa College,2-0.
It was another easy victory for the Warriors’ (4-0-1), but the coaches were not satisfied with the teams’ play.
“We started out strong with a lot of scoring opportunities, then unfortunately because some of the players didn’t feel it was a great challenge for them the pace of the game slowed and we weren’t as aggressive, “coach John Britton said.
“There was no real rhythm in our team,” assistant coach Eddie Barragon said. “We were having trouble in the midfield with short passes and we needed quicker touches in the middle. Overall we played okay, but they can play better and they know that.”
The team is nearing its conference schedule and complacency in play will not bode well if the team wishes to have a successful run.
“We went in there too confident. That wasn’t a good idea and that’s why we are suffering the consequences today in practice. But, this is all to get us ready for the beginning of conference play,” John Chavez, midfielder, said.
Despite a bit of let down in play, assistant coach Barragon was content in the manner the goals were scored.
“The goals were how we usually score; kick the ball wide, attack, get it in and score,” Barragon said.
The first goal of the game came in 15 minutes into the play.
“It was a beautiful play; it was a good build up play and I was able to score off a deflection,” Chavez said.
The second goal came in 30 minutes into the play.
“With my left foot I set it in to the top right of the goal,”Eduardo Bustos, forward, said.
The Warriors coaches are determined to get their squad primed and focused for the start of conference next week. Also, letting the team know starting positions are at stake.
“The guys know they are playing for starting spots. We won’t be experimenting. We’ll go with what we know and don’t have the luxury of taking risks,” Britton said.
Assistant coach Barragon has similar words for the team.
“We’re going to push them a little harder and get them ready for the real season to start. We want their intensity to stay the same for 90 minutes, they need to be focused,” Barragon said.
The Warriors next opponent will be Sep. 21 against Victory Valley College here at home.
