Sean Diament is treasurer for the Political Science Club.
When and where do meetings take place?
They take place in the Manhattan Beach Boulevard Modules, Room 130 every Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m.
How many members are in the club?
Well, I am happy to say that there are about 10 members. Compared to last semester when we only had three or four members, this is a great increase.
How long has the club been on campus?
It started about two or three years ago, but the people who started it transferred, and so the club ended. This past fall semester, my fellow students told me it was back on and they invited me to be a part of it. So, it has been going since this past fall semester.
What is your job as treasurer?
I am in charge of all paperwork. I also organize events and lead the discussions during the meetings. I send out e-mails to everyone with the topic of discussion for the following meeting. The treasurer has more power in our club structure.
Why does the treasurer hold more power?
It’s easier that way. Since the club used to be smaller, I didn’t want to count on people and hope they would come to every meeting. Since the treasurer is the one who authorizes funds, it’s the only position that really has to be there every meeting. The club has no problem with it, but if they did, they could always vote and choose differently.
What sorts of discussions are talked about during meetings?
We talk about or debate about certain bills or laws being passed, like Arizona SB 1070, the Immigration Bill. We also talk about the party system in the U.S. We talk about things that get students to think.
What kind of events does the club plan?
We try to do things that promote political views. We recently had a Voter Registration Membership Drive to get people to vote or register them to vote. This drive helped double our membership. We also try to get guest speakers, like local representatives, to speak at the club. It’s kind of hard to do events that work with everyone’s schedule, but we are trying to do more.
