After scoring the first goal of the game, freshman forward Kasey Wharton was visibly frustrated with missing the rest of her shot attempts. Fortunately for her, the Warriors didn’t need them.
EC used a barrage of shots to defeat Pasadena City College 3-1 Friday at Murdock Stadium.
“It’s my first year playing forward, and it was frustrating. I couldn’t finish,” Wharton said.
She scored early in the game to give the Warriors a quick 1-0 lead. The goalkeeper left the net to go after the ball, but Wharton took advantage of her aggressiveness and kicked it over her for the goal.
The victory against Pasadena gives the women a three-game winning streak, the longest of the season.
Stephanie Hall, sophomore forward-captain, was satisfied with the win. “We dominated with our breakaways, getting the extra touch, and I think we did pretty good,” Hall said.
The Warriors kept attacking the Pasadena net, mostly through breakaways. Natalie Soto, freshmen forward, scored a goal to give EC a 2-1 lead at the half.
In the second half, the chances continued to snowball, but they just couldn’t finish. Eventually Helen Padilla, sophomore defender, was able to score a goal to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead late in the game and close the win.
The defense played effectively, causing problems for the opposing team and giving the Warriors’ offense more chances to score.
Alicia Sala, freshman goalkeeper, once again had a strong game, allowing only one goal and providing some solid saves for the team.
The team had many chances to put Pasadena away for good, but just couldn’t capitalize. Hall added that it was frustrating for the team to miss all the chances it had.
“It was a great win, everybody came on for us,” Jaymie Baquero, coach, said. “We missed quite a few opportunities, had trouble scoring, but we got the win.”
Despite the trouble scoring, the team was still able to score a total of three goals.
“We are finally winning the games we deserve,” Baquero said.
After a rough start to the season, the effort is finally starting to pay off for the Warriors, picking up wins in the process.
With the current success of the team, Wharton is still looking ahead. “It’s great that we got the win, but we want to finish the season strong.”
The next game for the team will be on Tuesday when it faces Cerritos away from Murdock Stadium.
The Warriors played against Cerritos earlier in the season in a close 2-0 loss during a home game.
