Wide Receiver Andre Buford 52 yard punt return started a EC drive which, set the stage for quarterback Matt Simms one yard quarterback sneak play which put EC up 14-13.
This despite EC trailing 13-7 at halftime, but outscored the Panthers 17-0 in the second half in route to a 24-13 road win on Saturday night in Grigsby Field.
“Will it was different we weren’t use to being behind at halftime and i told the guys at halftime that i have strong belief in them, if their goe come back and win the game and that exactly what they did,” coach John Featherstone said.
The Warriors next game is Saturday at College of the Desert at 6 p.m. in Boone Stadium. The Roadrunners come into this game with a 4-2 record on the season.
“Yeah, College of the Desert is 4-2 and their a good football team, their a little bit different than Chaffey, but their still talent so we got to be sure,” Featherstone said.
The game started at 60 degrees and windy weather condition for kick-off.
“Not that much once you start playing football I think intially it was different because it’s a East and west field and the wind is blowing in your face instead of sideways and it wasn’t that cold, but cold enough,” Featherstone said.
Chaffey give EC a good game and a pretty good scare.
“We know Chaffey was good, I mean even though their 2-3 they where a couple of plays away from beating Grossmont, who is one of the undefeated teams in the state and they give Cerritos a very good game last week and Cerritos is still undefeated, they had to play three undefeated teams three weeks in a row and they played well and they played tough against all three and they could have win all three, they could have beaten us, but the bottom line is they didn’t,” Featherstone said.
“They had a pretty good game,but we controlled and dominated the second half,” tight end/ wide receiver Erik Stewart said.
The Warriors had 228 yards of offense, including 78 on the ground and 150 through the air.
On offense, Simms went 15-22 for 142 yards and two touchdown throws and a rushing touchdown.
Running back Tony Sekona had 13 yards on three carries and seven yards on two receptions and a touchdown reception and running back Ken Ashley had 44 yards on eight carries.
” Both of this guy’s run pretty hard,” Featherstone said.
“It was straight, but I had to work for it,” running back Tony Sekona said of his touchdown reception.
On defense, defensive end Ansley Jean- Jacques had eight tackles, four tackles for lost, three quarterback sacks for 27 points and lineback Bilal Muhammad had 13 tackles, two tackles for lost for 29 points.
“I think I performed decent and I made mistakes, but I’m happy the team win,” lineback Bilal Muhammad said.
The Warriors can expect more of what they saw on Saturday down the road as the season progress.
“You never know I expect our team to play better this week than we did to start out last week, now I expect our guys to play very hard this week, no letdown,” Featherstone said.
