A record of two wins and one defeat caps off last weeks two day double header for the EC women’s water polo team.
“It was tough” said head coach Corey Stanbury describing the game versus Pasadena City on Wednesday, September 16th. The women suffered a 2-8 loss against their conference rivals at this away game.
“They are strong and that’s how it goes” said Stanbury. The EC women went back and forth against Pasadena City last season, and this season looks like it will follow that trend.
Next up for EC was a mini tournament at home against L.A. Valley and Santa Monica.
“It went really well” said Stanbury describing the first game of the day against fellow South Coast Conference team L.A. Valley.
EC won the game 14-9, a much stronger win than their first of 12-10 last week, and did so while exemplifying a cohesive team unit.
“As a group we worked very well together” said Stanbury. Though team work was a key component some players stood out such as freshman Margaret Drischler who scored four goals and sophomore Erica Shaw who scored six.
“We were strong inside as well as outside” said Stanbury describing how the women maintained control of the pool as well as the ball.
Another strength the women showed was in their number of steals against L.A. Valley. Almost every starter made at least one steal with players Chloe Rodriguez, Katelynn Sloss, and Shaw each making multiple ones.
“We were especially strong in the 4th quarter” said Stanbury, noting that many of the goals and assists were scored during this time.
Also stepping up at this tournament was new goalkeeper Amanda Atkins who made one save against L.A. Valley and Alexandra Stumpf who also had one save.
“They are both new” said Stanbury and even with being new to EC water polo they are already a vital component.
“We were good and the game went pretty well” said Stumpf about the game against L.A. Valley.
“We were much better towards the end” said Atkins.
After one win of the day EC was up against Santa Monica, a team in which EC also defeated during the 2008 season.
The women won 10-9 in an exciting and close game. Their were many strong players throughout the game but no one stood out as much as new goalkeeper Stumpf who made six saves during the game. Shaw also stood out with four steals and four goals.
“It was really good overall and we played well” said Stanbury about the day as a whole.
Next up for EC is a home game at EC versus conference rivals Cerritos College. The 2008 season held a tough loss against Cerritos but with a new and stronger team it should be a much closer game and hopefully they will take home a victory this season.
The game will take place at the EC pool at 3p.m.
