Democratic nominations may still be raging on, but here at EC, it has been decided who will represent the students voice and opinions as Associated Students Organization(ASO) elections draw to a close and the winners look toward the Fall semester with a new ASO executive cabinet.
“We will try to get them ready for the new school semester because when the semester starts it is like a downhill race,” Harold Tyler, director of student services said.
Saturday morning the ASO election committee, along with Harold Tyler counted out, and then recounted, voter ballots which were posted, Monday in which more than 350 students voted for ASO members.
Megan McLean, who was running uncontested for ASO president, secured her nomination with 265 votes as well as Vice President candidate Ivana Poste.
Other winners include Joe Udeochu, barely edging out Michael Pearlson for director of academic affairs with 168 votes to Pearlson’s 150 votes.
Director of finance was declared to be Clarissa Jones while Enemuoh Chiamaka Sandra secured the director of student services position and Elise Yerelian was named student trustee for the fall semester.
With the elections finally over and winners announced, ASO can begin looking toward their plans for the fall semester.
Besides rebuilding ASO, since many veteran members are leaving, ASO would also like to focus on making ASO more well known around campus.
Tyler stressed the importance that not only does the executive cabinet have to prepare themselves to sit in on meetings but that the executive cabinet has to learn how utilize the other senators in understanding EC and the community college system in general.
“It is not saying that they are going to be weak, they have limitations, that is why the United States senators have staff so to be effective they are going to have to give something up,” Tyler said.
Poste, the newly elected vice president, is looking forward to creating a better working relationship between ASO, staff, and administration.
“I hope to accomplish so many things next year, all of them dealing with the school and the students,” Poste said.
During the summer the ASO elected officials will be involved in workshops that stress leadership and help members adjust.
