With about 30 minutes left in the game, Yennifer Baca went down with a game ending injury and the Warriors couldn’t overcome a 2-1 deficit to Long Beach City College.
“It was tough being in that spot and not being able to help the team out,” Baca said.
Baca was missed while the team tried to make the comeback in the last game of the regular season.
“We needed to score really bad, and not having her in the game was a blow to our team,” Vanessa Reid, midfielder, said. “But it just meant we had to fight even harder.”
The Warriors had to win its last two games in order to make the playoffs, they started the week off well, but couldn’t get the second win.
“Against East L.A. we played like we wanted to win, like we wanted to make it in the playoffs and Thursday not everyone was on their game,” Itchel Guzman said. “We tried, but we just couldn’t connect.”
The team felt pressure knowing that if they didn’t win on Thursday, that may be the end of the season.
“They told us to play as if it was a playoff game because it was either we win or not make it in, but it wasn’t enough,” Guzman said.
After waiting for other teams to finish any regular season games, the women’s team did not make the playoffs.
“It sucks that we had to depend on others to make the playoffs,” Reid said. “I just wish we won Thursday and we would know for sure that we were in it.”
Though it is the end of the season, the Warriors know they had a good season even if they fell short of playoffs.
“We are a hard working team and we fought through every game,” Baca said. “I am happy to have been part of the EC 2011 women’s soccer team. It was a great experience and everyone hung out when we could.”
