The sand volleyball team split a home doubleheader when they hosted Fullerton College and Golden West College on Friday.
The Warriors beat Fullerton College 4-1, and were then swept for the first time by Golden West College, 5-0.
Britnie Welchhance said that the team performed well for the first game whereas in the second they let unforced errors get to them.
“I still think that we played very well in the second game,” Welchhance said. “We just needed to make our performance better.”
Laynie Thompson said she thought the Warriors stayed pretty calm despite early setbacks in the match.
“I think that we did make a lot of our own errors that were unforced. If we had cut down on those, we may not have had to go to three with both teams,” Thompson said. “It could have been a different story.”
This is the second time the Warriors have lost a game to Golden West College this season and this being the first sweep they have suffered, Welchhance and Thompson have a plan in mind in case they’re pitted against the same opponents come playoff time.
“I feel like (we should) place the balls better when we hit and to serve over the net, not in the net,” Welchhance said. “I think just play smart overall. We could have totally beat them. I think it was just (about) getting on top of ourselves.”
Not giving up so many points was a focal point in getting the win next time, Thompson said.
“We need to not make errors and get the big points,” Thompson said.
Despite the loss, Williams also reflected upon what the team has improved on, with the season being close to its conclusion.
“[We’re] faster as a team,” Williams said. “We still have to work on our talking and communication, forget about the last error, and focus on the next point. We’re smarter than when we first started.”
This was the first time the team met Fullerton this season, while it was its second meeting against Golden West College. Last time they met, they lost at Golden West College 4-1.
The Warriors record is now 9-3. Their next game will be Friday at 11 a.m. as they host Antelope Valley College and Fullerton College.
