When the dust of the sand being blown into the air by multiple volleyball matches cleared, the scoreboard read 5-0; a sweep in favor of the Warriors.
Not even a late addition to their schedule could unexpectedly knock the Warriors’ sand volleyball team off their feet as they beat Rio Hondo College for the second time this season on Tuesday.
The EC sand volleyball team swept Rio Hondo College for the second time this season. The match was recently added to their schedule at the 11th hour, but the Warriors arrived prepared.
Laynie Thompson ranked her team’s performance as being good.
“(Our performance level was) high. I think we did really well,” Thompson said.
Thompson also acknowledged the improvements that her team has made so far this season.
“We’re learning to not get frustrated and not make as many unforced errors,” Thompson said.
Darlene Lee felt that her team improved their rapport.
“We’re starting to connect more and talk more and we’re starting to read the hits more,” Lee said.
Lee is a veteran of the indoor volleyball team at EC. Coinciding with her thoughts on the Warrior’s amelioration of their team chemistry, Lee said that she thought sand volleyball was the more intricate sport in contrast to indoor volleyball.
“Sand volleyball is a little difficult because we only have two people instead of six and the court is smaller to read,” Lee said. “We also have to deal with the wind as well, but it gets easy to adjust. We have to cover a lot more than indoors.”
Despite Lee considering sand volleyball the more complex sport, their performance seemed to shroud any signs of it. Their level of play has spoken more about serenity than discomfort.
Brooke Russell attested to that comfort and said that the team has adjusted well, especially herself, transitioning from indoor volleyball to sand volleyball as well.
“I mean I took a couple weeks but I think we’re all really comfortable in getting the hang of it really well,” Russell said. “It’s a definite change, but we’re all adjusting well.”
In addition, Russell spoke on the performance of her team and compared the Warriors’ performance against Rio Hondo compared to the season-opener.
“We were really consistent in the first game and then were down in the second game and then came back and won,” Russell added regarding the distinction between playing against Rio Hondo this time out, and the last meeting they had.
Nonetheless, the Warriors managed to pull off the victory on both occasions.
The sand volleyball teams overall record improved to 4-1 after their win. Their next match is scheduled to take place on Friday as they compete against Long Beach City College at 11 a.m.
