The women’s tennis team’s player positions shifted after top performer Rose Sgolsutyatorn, Rookie of the Year and All-American, was taken out of action due to injury.
Warriors women’s tennis earned their first back-to-back loss of the season after falling to Glendale College, 8-1.
“Our team did great,” coach Steve Kanegan. “However, our number one player is now out of action with an injury. We had to move everybody up one position and that makes it real difficult against a very tough team.”
In the singles, freshman Serina Rowland lost 6-0, 6-1 and sophomore Shenae Shampine was defeated, 6-3, 6-3.
“In doubles we were okay,” Shampine said. “Me and (sophomore) Donya (Assef) are a fantastic team; I love hitting with that girl. We almost had them and should have pulled it out. We should have won our doubles but ultimately they were just a better team.”
Sophomore Donya Assef lost, 6-2, 7-5, freshman Chihiro Yamada was dominated, 6-2, 6-0, and freshman Mellisa Gronik lost, 6-3, 7-5.
“I just tried to stay consistence as possible. I was up against a really good girl, it was like hitting against a brick wall, Shampine said. “I think I did all right. I am supposed to be moving up in the rank soon because we just lost our number one girl, so that’s going to be interesting.”
In the doubles Rowland and Gronik loss, 8-3. Assef and Shampine lost, 9-8 (3). Shugars and Yamada pulled off an 8-4 win.
“My match was good. I just kept going,” Yamada said.
