Dominating their competition, the EC women’s tennis team pulled off a win in their first conference game to expand their winning streak.
EC Warriors tennis team won their conference opener against Rio Hondo College (RHC) 9-0 to improve their record to 5-1.
The Warriors are now on a five game winning streak, with three straight wins at home.
“We pretty much dominated. The team we played against was Rio Hondo. They have always been, not so good. It wasn’t much of a challenge,” assistant coach Yasuto Mayawaki said.
In the doubles, sophomores Serina Rowland and Rose Sgolsutyatorn won against RHC players 8-3.
Sophomores Donya Assef and Shenae Shampine won against RHC players 8-2 and closing out the doubles were sophomores Jade Shugars and her partner Chihiro Yamada beating RHC players 8-1.
In the singles Sgolsutyatorn, played a strong match to pull off a win against RHC player, 6-0, 6-0.
“I did well, but I could improve on being more steady and to fight,” Sgolsutyatorn said.
Rowland won against RHC player, Jess Diaz, 6-4, 6-1.
“I feel like I could have played better even though I won it,” Rowland said.
Shampine played well to come out on top against RHC player, 6-1, 6-0. Shugars dominated her match against RHC player, 6-0, 6-0.
Assef won in an easy match against RHC player, 6-1, 6-1. Yamada played strong against her match beating RHC player, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman, Melissa Gronik played hard against her match pulling off a win vs RHC player , 6-0. 6-0.
Warriors women’s tennis team will look to continue the winning streak to six straight next game will be on Feb. 19. It will be away at College of the Desert at 2 p.m.
“Our next match is at College of the Desert. This season they started off strong. Our women, they are still strong but I don’t think as strong as last year, so I think it will be a tough match,” Mayawaki said.
