With five seconds left to play in the game, Noah Rubke, captain, stole the ball, swam about seven strokes and lofted a “Hail Mary” from half court as time expired.
The desperate attempt went in, finishing a thrilling game against Santa Monica. The men’s water polo team placed third in the Saddleback Tournament, defeating Santa Monica, 9-8.
The next game is at home against L.A. Trade Tech. at 4.p.m. Wednesday.
“When I stole the ball a lot of thoughts went through my head,” Rubke said. “I can actually win this right now, with this shot.”
Luckily for Rubke, the goalie was a slow getting back into position.
“I was lucky the goalie wasn’t back in the goal yet and I was able to loft it over him,” Rubke said.
Even with a 22-7 loss to Palomar and a 17-7 loss to Saddleback, the Warriors were able to bounce back.
In the following match, they defeated Santa Ana, 16-9.
“We had a real good win against Santa Ana,” Corey Stanbury, coach said. “We fell apart a little bit before halftime of that game, but we were able to get the job done after halftime.”
Along with this victory, Javier Molina, captain, has moved 12 assists away from tying the EC record for career assists.
After this weekend, the team moves to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
For the women’s water polo team, it was defeated 18-2 by Cerritos College last Wednesday.
With the loss, the women are still in search for its first victory, as they fell to 0-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The women’s water polo team now look for its first victory of the season when L.A. Trade Tech. visits Wednesday, at 3 p.m.
“We had a really close game with Pasadena and Pasadena had a close game with Mt. SAC,” Stanbury said. “We are just going to see if we can do a lot of correct things and come out on top.”
