Women’s tennis is stunned again

Going into the match, the women’s tennis team had its hopes set on turning in a good performance. Unfortunately, it was an all too familiar scene.

Still unable to find its rhythm, the Warriors once again lost 8-1 to Mt. San Antonio last Thursday, remaining winless in the regular season.

“If anything it’s just pumping us up and making us work harder to get to our goal,” Ashley Bell, freshman, said of the recent string of losses.

The Warriors are now 0-5 for the season.

The team will look to get its first win of the regular season when they go against Long Beach City College today at 2 p.m. at home.

During the losing stretch, the Warriors have been outscored 41-4, including being held scoreless in two matches.

“Personally we all did better than the last time we played Mt. SAC,” Miller said. “We have a good feeling of how they play.”

They went against Mt. SAC, one of the top teams in the division, earlier in the season, one of the top teams in the division, in a match that ended much the same as this one.

“We were very excited, we were really happy to face our opponent again and just try to do better then we did last time,” Sasha Miller, freshman, said.

While most of the Warriors have prior tennis experience, not all of them have played competitively and the team is still getting used to the pressure, Miller said.

One player that was a standout in the loss was Carolina Mendoza, whom Teila Robertson, assistant coach, praised.

“Carolina started to pick her game up,” Robertson said, “she gained confidence in her swings and said she was up for the challenge.”

In the wake of these wide margin losses, the players are adamant about trying to stay confident, improve their individual games, and looking at the glass half full.

“We just need to have confidence,” Miller said. “Keep fighting and get those points in so that the games can flip the other way.”

With just a handful of teams in its division, the Warriors will get a shot at redemption once more when they go against Mt. SAC next week.

Miller said that the team is “very serious” about rebounding from recent losses and still holds hope of the slim chance of making it to the playoffs.
