Coming off lost against College of the Desert and Mt. San Antonio College last week, the men’s tennis team rebounded with a 9-0 victory over Long Beach City. The women continued to struggle with a 8-1 loss to Cerritos.
The next match for the Warriors is today, when the men travel to Mt. San Antonio and the women to Cerritos. Both the men and women share the same record of 3-5.
As with all sports, injuries cannot be avoided. Fortunately for the tennis team’s, they have been relatively injury free.
“There are no major injuries, but there are some nagging injuries,” coach Steve Van Kanegan said.
The women agree that the season is going well because they are all improving.
“The men and women are getting consistent and seeing their confidence grow and we are starting to see improvements,” Van Kanegan said.
As a coach, Van Kanegan is motivated by seeing his player’s improvements and watching their confidence grow each match.

“We will discuss the previous match and critique it. We will also work on what needs to be improved upon and talk with each other and agree that it takes hard practice to improve,” Van Kanegan said.
Coming into each match, the Warrior’s are usually excited and enjoy competing against other college’s. They enjoy playing and enjoy seeing improvements in each other.
For the men’s double against Long Beach, Tsuyoshi Nagaoka and teammate Keith Boggero defeated Matt Taggart and Le Nguyen 8-3 while Jon Duarte and Tim Kang defeated Tom Taylor and Todd McGuiness 8-6. Jonathan Chin and Taylor Neal defeated default but scores were not available from that match.
In men’s singles action, Nagaoka defeated Taggart from Long Beach City College 6-0, 6-0.Boggero won his match against Nguyen 6-1, 6-0. Duarte won his match against Taylor 6-2, 6-1. Neal won his match against McGuiness 6-0, 6-1. Chin won his match against John Hodnett 4-6, 7-5, 10-0. Sergio Guerra won his match against Anthony Herrera 6-1, 6-0.
The women’s scores for all matches against Cerritos were not available at press time.
“Our mindset after a game usually depends on how the team performed and sometimes the team is disappointed if they didn’t perform well against the other colleges,” Van Kanegan said.
