Like a mighty bulldozer, EC’s badminton team steamrolled through its games against Compton City College and East L.A. College last week, demolishing its competition with relative ease.
After a bye yesterday, play resumes for the women when they face Pasadena City at home tomorrow, at 3 p.m.
The women defeated an inexperienced Compton City team at home Wednesday, winning 16-5. Friday, they went on the road to topple East L.A. by an uneven margin of 19-2.
Although a few of the women played through pain against Compton City, they still managed to play effectively.
“I played with a pulled butt muscle,” Jennifer Hobson said. “But I think I played well; I won all my games.”
“I had a strained hammy (hamstring),” Marjorie Cortez said, who also won her singles match. “I broke a sweat today.”
Nonetheless, the women still managed to play effectively.
“I played well,” said Brittany Garcia, one of the many new players on the team. “I had some good smashes today.”
Last Friday the women took on an East L.A. team that, although was one of the best teams last season, is regarded weaker then it was last year.
“East L.A. is not as strong as they were last season,” said coach John Britton said, who guided his team to a dominating 19-2 victory.
Britton was especially pleased by the former soccer players on his team, who are playing badminton for the first time.
“I am very proud of them because they came in with no experience,” Britton said. “But with every game, they gain experience and become better.”
Cortez, a former soccer player, scored victories of 11-4 and 11-6 over her opponent despite being a little tired from the trip. She remains unbeaten this season.
“It took forever to get there because it was raining and there was heavy traffic,” she said. “But they (East L.A.) were pretty easy.”
The other two former soccer players, Hobson and Brittany Garcia, were also victorious in their contests. Hobson won both of her singles matches, as did Garcia, who also won a doubles contest.
As for doubles, the Warriors won all of their matches against East L.A., except one.
The No. 2 doubles team of Danielle Ruedas amd Ida Leong Sok lost their first match against East L.A.’s No. 2 team, mostly because it was their first match playing together.
“It was their first time playing together, so they were a little out of sync,” Britton said.
However, the pair regrouped and won their second match.
“The two women talked after the first game, and got it together. They came up for the second match and beat their No. 1 team,” Britton said.
The new No. 1 doubles team of Tomoe Okaguchi and Mayumi Inata easily won their contests. Britton said he was pleased with his new No. 1 team, but they need to develop some chemistry.
“Mayumi is a good singles player, but she needs to be a bit more aggressive (when playing doubles),” he said. “With time and practice, she should.”
But winning is not always easy. Yanni Ma, who won her games 11-0 and 11-1, had some second thoughts about her performance.
“I beat her so badly, I felt bad afterward,” she said.
