With the playoffs on the horizon and a state championship within sights, the women’s undefeated volleyball team will have to start the post season without its team captain.
Last week, Amie Abad, the starting setter and captain, injured her thumb and will most likely be unable to play in the first playoff game on Tuesday in the South gym.
Some of the players looking to fill Abad’s shoes are Krizia Hernandez and Jenna Lofstrom.
“Krizia and Jenna will split time,” assistant coach Richard Blount said.
The Warriors got a chance to compete without Abad yesterday in a game against L.A. Harbor but scores weren’t available by press time.
“It was just an accident and there is nothing you can do,” Blount said. “So we are going to play with Krizia and Jenna.”
The Warriors will play at home on Tuesday and with a win, will then host a second round opponent on Saturday, Nov. 27.
The team has been preparing for the playoffs in practice with the coaches putting an emphasis on training and intensity.
“We’ve been beating them up. We have been doing more running and conditioning so their head is right on for the playoffs,” Blount said.
The team is the No. 2 seed in the South. The championship format will be an eight team tournament with four teams coming from both the north and south.
The Warriors were able to get the second seed by going 16-0 before the Harbor game.
The Warriors beat Long Beach on Nov. 3, Mt. SAC on Nov. 5 and Pasadena City Nov. 12.
The Warriors beat the Lancers 30-16, 30-22, 30-22.
Andrea Hernandez played her best statistical game of the season against Pasadena City with nine kills and nine digs.
Tina Moore led the team with 16 digs and Timary More helped out the offense, adding seven kills.
The team swept Long Beach in a big rivalry match, 30-25, 30-24, 30-24.
“We played well,” Blount said. “We outplayed them.”
When Mt. SAC came to EC, the Warriors were a bit sluggish after the emotional victory over Long Beach, but prevailed after a rough first game, 32-30, 30-19, 30-24.
“It was a good wakeup call. We came out flat,” Blount said. “There was a let-down after the Long Beach game. Whether it was expected or not, you can’t let-down after anything.”
The women will not be able to come out sluggish in the playoff’s or their undefeated season will be a waste.
