In extreme conditions, Dusty Stumpp was the sole qualifier to the Southern California regional golf championship Monday.
Stumpp shot an 80 in the first round and was as hot as the triple digit temperatures for the second round when he shot an even par 73.
Stumpp’s season stroke average was 75.75, which qualified him for the regional tournament.
“Dusty beat out the next golfer by one tenth of a stroke to qualify. Herrera, from Mt. SAC, had a seventy-five point eighty-five average,” coach Terry Titus said.
The Southern California regional championship will be Monday at the Southern California Professional Golf Association (SCPGA) course in Beaumont.
“I can’t say every, but almost all twenty-five golf schools in Southern California will be represented on Monday,” Titus said.
Qualifying for the regional competition was more complicated than in previous years because of the budget cuts which only allows the conference to send four players as opposed to six.
In the regional championship, Stumpp will try to qualify for a tee time in the state championship.
“Dusty has worked harder than anyone I’ve ever had,” Titus said. “He has a real chance of making it to the state championship.”
“He deserves to go because he is a great guy,” Andy Greene, captain, said.
Dan Turner shot 80, then 78 in his two rounds and Wilton Guerra shot 81 and 79 to be the second and third best golfers for EC, respectively.
“We started the first round at eight-thirty in the morning and finished the second round ten minutes before eight,” Titus said.
“It was a really long day.”
