How to spend the long awaited break
I am almost too exhausted to even write this column.
The spring 2015 semester is coming to a close. All of the hard work we have put in over the last four months is finally paying off.
Any slacking off we did is also rearing its head in the form of last minute scrambles to get the work done and earn those extra credits that will keep us above the passing line.
Summer is almost here; we can see it on the horizon.
How will you spend it?
Lots of students will return to El Camino in a few short weeks to begin summer session. The desire to get ahead in our academic endeavors often overpowers our need to spend the summer working on our tans at the beach or lounging around next to the pool.
Some students will do internships. Gaining useful experience in the world of work is an admirable way to spend the summer.
Those who already have jobs may pick up extra hours to earn money to pay for those fall classes, and that is also a noble way to spend the summer.
We have a little over 16 weeks to give our brains a break, rejuvenate our momentum and prepare for the fall semester.
Sixteen weeks is roughly the length of the average semester, so let’s be sure to use that time wisely.
Catch up on reading that book you have been putting to the side in favor of academic texts.
Take a look at the textbook list for your coming classes, and see if there is any way to start knocking some of the reading out now so that you begin the new school year ahead of the curve.
For those of you who will be moving on from El Camino and attending a four-year university this fall, take some time this summer to get to know your new campus. Learn the layout of the landscape. Figure out which buildings and rooms your knew classes will be in, and the best way to get to them on those busy first few days of school.
Most importantly, take some time to allow your brain to decompress from all that it has been through over the last semester. Go to your favorite nail salon and indulge in a manicure or pedicure. Go get a deep tissue massage to knead all that school stress away.
Spend some time in the cool dark movie theater checking out this summer’s blockbusters.
Have family fun day at the park or explore the city with your friends.
Summer is the perfect time to catch up on all your television shows and Netflix streaming watch lists.
Plan a road trip to Vegas or have a bonfire out at Dockweiler State Beach.
Summer is Hollywood Bowl season, and the perfect opportunity to pack a picnic and go to one of the many concerts being offered during the warm summer months. Immerse yourself in the cultural offerings of our city.
Spend a day riding the various Metro trains and buses, and give yourself a tourist style view of Los Angeles.
Spend some time reflecting on how this school year went for you, and determine what you would like to change in order to make the next school year even better.
Whatever we choose to do, always remember that El Camino will be here waiting for us to return, and so will “The Union.”
Have a great summer, everyone.
