Con: Do extreme makeovers alleviate insecurities?
Society has come up with a shallow solution to fix those deemed the ugly people of the world.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and reality TV shows such as “The Swan” and “Extreme Makeover” are demoralizing and shallow.
In Hans Christian Andersen’s tale “The Ugly Duckling,” it took time and years for the ugly duckling to become a swan.
Collagen shots and liposuction are not only expensive, but dangerous. They also make people who see themselves as ugly think that changing their looks will solve all their insecurities.
USA Today reporter Robert Bianco said that the media convinces these women their self-worth is wrapped up in their physical appearance, alters them to meet some unspecified standard of beauty and then tells all but one, “Sorry, you’re still not worthy enough.”
People who want to be confident with themselves should see a therapist instead of a surgeron, since most obstacles in life start in a person’s head.
Those interested in extreme makeovers should make sure they are surrounded by positive people who see the beauty in them.
Going out and joining a gym can improve a person’s mental and physical state.
Extreme makeovers are a quick fix, but not everything can be done so fast. It takes time to get a person’s body and self-esteem into shape.
