A man was detained for allegedly attempting to steal a bicycle, while holding a knife and shouting out racial slurs on Tuesday, Nov. 1 near the Marsee Auditorium, according to the police beat.
The suspect was a 36-year-old caucasian man who was allegedly shouting derogatory terms against African-Americans, Police Chief Michael Trevis said.
The man was screaming “I hate n—–s” and “F—–g n—–s” while challenging students to fight him, according to the witness account from the police beat.
The man also had a knife in his hand, a box cutter in his pocket and a bolt cutter in his backpack.
Witnesses told EC Police that he was using the bolt cutter to cut the cable locks used to lock bicycles on the bicycle rack, according to the police beat.
The man was arrested and charged by EC police with attempted grand theft, possession of burglary tools, vandalism, causing a disturbance, and providing false identification to police, according to the police beat.
