Women’s History Month has arrived and EC is celebrating this month by honoring women of EC and the community.
In honor of Women’s History Month many events are taking place on campus to showcase and celebrate women from all walks of life. One event in particular is something faculty, staff, students and community members alike can take part in. This event is the Women of Distinction Award nominations.
While one can choose who to nominate, there are specific criteria that must be met in order for the nomination to be accepted.
Nominees must work or live in the EC district that include the cities of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Lennox, Lawndale, Hawthorne, Inglewood and Torrance. Family, friends or colleagues can nominate nominees. Also nominees will be judge based on certain contributions they have made within EC and the community.
“It’s great that they are giving women that recognition it shows a lot of progress over the years for women,” Victoria Snedley, 26, business administration major. “I’ve never nominated anybody but I definitely will this year or next year.”
Students seem to see the significance of women being honored for the various accomplishments they have made.
“It’s really nice to see women being recognized for what they achieve,” Crystal Rodgers, 19, psychology major, said. “It sends a very positive message.
In its 17th year history the Women of Distinction Award has been given to many women. Last year, among the eight women who were honored were was Janice Ball, Arlene Bautista, Ora Bryant, Linda Mobley, Jeanie Nishime, and Sue Ellen Warren.
“At first I was surprised then I felt like there had to be so many more people other than me that were more qualified and I felt a little embarrassed,” Sue Ellen Warren, 2012 honoree, said. “I was honored but I also felt that students need to have and I could be a good role model.”
“I think it’s important to have anybody honored men or women of course but it makes a statement for Women’s History Month”
