E-cigs a popular smoking alternative among students
With an ongoing concern about smoking on campus, the use of vapor cigarettes are an easy solution for students.
Vapor cigarettes, often called “E-Cigs” are electronic cigarettes that emit vapor instead of smoke. The idea behind it is for vapor cigarettes to be an alternative to actual cigarettes. There are different brands of vapor cigarettes and there are cartridges that have to be bought to use them.
According to latimes.com, vapor cigarettes can be used with cartridges containing various levels of nicotine which can come with different flavors including menthol, tobacco, blueberry and vanilla.
Although they have been around for some time, vapor cigarettes are newly gaining popularity with students on campus.
“I have friends that use them and since I don’t smoke at all, I think it’s a great idea, not just for smokers but for us that don’t,” Melissa Young, 19, undecided major said. “Second hand smoke is real so I think electronic cigarettes help a lot.”
There has been some concern that these vapor cigarettes can contain marijuana.
“There’s no way to be sure (that it contains marijuana) but they do make electronic cigarettes where you have to have something attached to it,” Officer Jan Caldwell said.
Though it is possible that students could be using marijuana, its more likely then they are not.
“You wouldn’t be able to just buy it at 7-11 or something, I doubt anybody really would be using it on campus,” Patricia Lee, 26, music major said.
With something like a vapor cigarette there would positive and negative outlooks on it.
“There are more pros than cons, they are very convenient, you don’t have to constantly buy cigarettes,” Russell Moore, 25, economics major, said. “Plus it’s not (real) smoke so second hand isn’t an issue.”
For some students, it’s not just about convenience but the ability to slow down their habit.
“For me, it’s like you don’t feel addicted and you don’t buy multiple packs a day,” Eric Powell, 21, communications major, said. “Cons I guess the price of it, since you do need to replace the parts.”
Given the frequent use of cigarettes on campus there is a possibilty that vapor cigarettes will add to that problem.
“Theoretically, it shouldn’t. It’s not smoke so there shouldn’t be a problem,” Caldwell said.
Talks about banning cigarettes in general have been discussed quite often but whether or not vapor cigarettes should be banned is a completely different issue.
“No policy has been made, there wouldn’t be a law against it so I dont understand how it would be a problem,” Caldwell said.
