With Thanksgiving one week away many people will be getting their turkeys ready, glazing their hams to perfection and buying some apple pie to finish it off.
While Thanksgiving is a day for giving thanks for what we have and how far we’ve come, Thanksgiving along with the days leading up to Christmas charities and organizations will be hosting events to benefit the homeless or underprivileged children.
Feeding America will be accepting $1 donations that will help provide seven Thanksgiving meals for hungry people according to its website www.feedingamerica.org.
Alone with the $1 donations the organization is working to provide a Thanksgiving feast of 9 million meals for Americans.
Feeding America isn’t alone in giving, as EC will be joining the cause next month when the Inter-Club Council hosts its ICC Children Holiday Party that will benefit children of the Head Start program.
The event will give the children a day to receive gifts and do a bunch of different activities.
“I think the event is a great idea,” Erica Viramontes, psychology major, said. “I participated in the same program when I was in high school and it’s such a great sight to see all the kids having fun and seeing the look on their faces when you give them gifts.”
The ICC event will be starting 11:30 a.m. Dec. 9 in the Student Activities Center in the East Lounge.
Along with the non-profit organizations and campus clubs, some students will also give back in their neighborhoods.
“My family has this tradition every year where we go to our church and we sponsor a family,” Eric Morales, art major, said. “We buy the family food for Thanksgiving. Anything they’d like we buy them. It’s a day to give back and it feels great to help families that in some cases wouldn’t have the same opportunities.”
