Munchy, a popular food station near the Planetarium where many students and staff go to buy food between classes has received a B on its final food facility rating.
The Los Angeles County Department of Health issued this grade almost a year ago, in April of 2009. Many of the students aren’t even aware of the grade card hanging
up near the cash register.
“I didn’t know they had a B grade. That’s not good. I’m still going
to buy snacks, but not the food that they cook there,” Maricela Conteras, journalism major, said.
According to lapublichealth.org, Munchy received a total score of 81 due to 11 violations.
The violations included improperly
covered or labeled foods, unclean walls, floors or ceilings and potentially hazardous foods not kept at required temperatures.
“I wasn’t the manager when Munchy got issued a B, but it was around the time that we weren’t organized,
so that’s why we got the B,” Orasa Chan, manager of the Munchy, said.
Some students feel as if Munchy should do better and said they weren’t going to buy food that was cooked there, while others weren’t bothered by the fact that the Munchy has a B grade.
“A and B grades are good. I don’t eat at the Munchy every day, but if other students are still going then I wont mind eating there,” Fernando Meza, business major, said.
Munchy once posted an A grade card with an overall score of 90 in 2008. In order
to receive an A again, Munchy needs to clear up the violations against it and pass the next health inspection.
” I think we are ready and prepared to get that A in the next health inspection,” Chan said.
“We have corrected many things and we’re waiting for the next inspection,” Chan said.
Munchy would need to keep the floors, refrigerator, and stove clean.
They would also have to keep food at the required temperatures and keep the store organized.
Certain students have complained
that it’s too “stuffy” inside and the “over-crowding” of people makes Munchy look dirtier than it really is.
