The Associated Students Organization (ASO) will be holding a Special Election for Student Trustee tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Activities Center – South Patio and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Activities Center – West Lounge.
On Thursday the election will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Library Lawn and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Activities Center – West Lounge. This will be the ASO’s third attempt to fill this position.
“I wouldn’t say it’s been difficult to “fill” the position. Rather, it’s just turned out that those elected were unable to maintain their qualifications. The actual filling of the position has been simple; it’s just been difficult to keep it filled. But, c’est la vie,” Josh Casper, 19, ASO President said.
As Student Trustee one is given the responsibility of representing the student body as the Student Representative to the El Camino Community College District (ECCCD) Board of Trustees, which is considered the highest decision-making body in the ECCCD.
“They are to provide the student opinion to the Board of Trustees and be a provisional vote on the Board. It’s a very important position in the ASO,” Casper said.
The ASO, advocator for student rights, has two candidates in the running for Student Trustee, Chris Pham and Bree Bond.
Pham, 19, political science and paralegal studies double major, is not only President of Alpha Gamma Sigma but is also Commissioner of Fundraising for the ASO.
“I want to run for trustee because I want to be the voice for the people and learn what goes on behind the scene of our campus. Students should vote for me because of my work ethics and my dependability. My motto is, I may not know all the answers, but I will do whatever I can to find the answers and never give up,” Pham said.
Bond, 20, sociology major, is currently the Student Services Officer for the ASO in addition to being in the Honors Transfer Program, Student Ambassador and a member of the EC Community Band.
“I am a tenacious woman, fiercely persistent and I stand firm and work hard for what I believe in. Students should vote for me because I’ve become very knowledgeable on how the ECC functions and how all decisions affect students. I have no problem expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions on behalf of the students at Board Meetings or any other type of meetings where decisions are made,” Bond said.
Students wishing to vote in the Special Election must present a valid ECC student ID with the current semester sticker on it at all voting locations. Election results will be decided by the Special Elections Committee and will be posted on Monday.
