ECC scholarships are now available for students to apply by logging onto MY ECC or applying at the student scholarship office.
There are two different scholarships that are offered through the scholarship office such as: institutional scholarships which are ran through EC’s scholarship program and non-institutional scholarships that come from outside private companies and foundations. Students have to log onto MY ECC to apply for institutional scholarships where they would have to click on the “scholarship application” link which will prompt them to register. Then they will have to log in their email through the MY ECC system which will have a message that prompts them back to the “scholarship application” link to then go apply and show available scholarships. For non-institutional scholarships, Kamahele has organized a facebook page where students are able to see the non-institutional scholarships available through the scholarship office. A student must log onto facebook and enter ECC scholarship in the search area and click on “page” and find according to Kahea Kamahele, the scholarship office Scholarship Coordinator.
“Any updates for our program like now is the time to get the letter of recommendation in, or open period is now, time to apply, periodically I will go into facebook and advertise a specific scholarship,” Kamahele said.
300 scholarships are now available for students to apply for from different companies and from EC. Students must register by Jan. 29, 2010 before the application closes and they must make sure to turn in all required paperwork to the scholarship office.
“Any time during the semester breaks we are still here,” Kamahele said.
In order for a student to be qualified for a scholarship, they are required to have a minimum GPA of 2.0, six EC units completed, one letter of recommendation although some may ask for more, and a personal essay and personal statement. Some scholarships require students to be on financial aid and complete the FAFSA, but others don’t. Kamahele also recommends that if a student has done any community service or volunteer work that it should be recorded.
“The six units have to be cumulative and has to be graded. They can’t be credit, no credit classes,” Kamahele said.
Currently Kamahele is not holding any workshops at the scholarship office, but is offering workshops to the clubs on campus.
“I do offer workshops to the clubs, so
students will have to make an appointment and I can come to the club meeting and make a little presentation for the scholarships,” Kamahele said.
Deadlines for all scholarships are different for all scholarships but Kamahele encourages all students to apply. The scholarship office is located on the first floor of the Administration building Room 119. The hours of operation is M-F 10a.m. to 1p.m. and 2p.m. to 4p.m., and also Fridays from 9a.m. to 1p.m. The hours for winter session have not been determined, but students are encouraged to go to the scholarship office during the break before the deadline.
