As the previous sexual assault cases are still under investigation and leads have, the EC Police Department has partnered with the Gardena P.D. in order to help with the cases.
Last fall, a student was sexually assaulted near the South Gym as someone grabbed her out of a crowd and threatened her with a knife.
In the spring semester, another student was attacked, this time by two men, one of which sexually assaulted her and the other served as a look out.
Most recently, in September, there was an attempted attack in the upper-level of Lot F as a student was walking to her car while she was listening to music.
EC enlisted the help of the Gardena P.D. about a month ago because of Garden’a ability to handle these types of cases.
“Their bureau has a detective who is helping us with these sexual assault cases,” Mike Trevis, chief of police, said. “They are specialized in handling these matters.”
While the EC police has found leads in the cases, they have proven fruitless.
“We thought we had a lead and some possible information,” Trevis said. “But it turned out to be nothing, so at this point, we still have no leads.”
Despite the investigation still being open and without sufficient information, police said they are working as much as possible as they want to put an end to the case and catch the suspects responsible.
“Trust me, I really want to catch them,” Trevis said. “That’s why we joined with Gardena.”
In the meantime, Trevis advised that all students take precautions in order to stay safe when on campus, as there is always a risk of things occuring when students are not aware.
“We need to emphasize that students need to be aware of what’s going on around them,” Trevis said. “They should not be listening to music or be talking on their phone. Anything can happen when they are not paying attention.”
