Campus Forum: Bill Lopez, Homecoming King, from the Circle K club.
Bill Lopez was crowned homecoming king this year.
What club are you from?
I am from Circle K.
We’re a service organization; we do a lot of community service and raise funds for charities. It’s a lot of fun.
How does the club raise money for charities?
Well, we do a variety of things.
The Circle K organization has a lot going on because it is an international organization.
The Circle K club at El Camino also won both first and second place for Southern California in the Crazy Kids competition to raise funds for that.
Next weekend, we’re going to leadership training and our team is going to compete against the northern half of the state for the overall win.
How do you think you’re going to do in that competition?
I am psyched. I’ve been practicing my limbo for that because I hear that’s a big part of the competition.
How can students join Circle K?
Show up at the meetings. They are Thursdays at 1 p.m. in Social Sciences, Room 106. It’s a wonderful club.
What else does the club do?
We have social activities.
We recently had a Halloween dance above the campus bookstore. We’re hosting a dance Dec. 3. It’s going to be a fundraiser for Toys for Tots.
We’re going to have representatives from the U.S. Marine Corp. there to give away the ceremonial big check.
We want to show a lot of awareness to the programs and the kids out there. We want the kids to have a Christmas that they might not otherwise have.
Did you expect to become homecoming king?
I worked hard for it. I actually started campaigning a week before the voting started and I printed up 4,000 fliers with my picture on them and I personally handed out 3,000 of them. So I did a lot of talking and a lot of work.
Do you think becoming homecoming king will help promote your club?
I’m hoping so, yeah. We had the pep rally out here earlier in the week.
I gave a good speech about the Circle K club and what we were doing.
I believe it’s the greatest club on campus. This club has really backed me up one hundred percent.
After they voted me their representative to run for homecoming king, I couldn’t let them down.
