El Camino’s Music department will be hosting a songwriting master class led by a renowned USC music teacher and songwriter on Tuesday, April 5.

Andrea Stolpe teaches songwriting at the University of California’s Thornton School of Music. In the past, she has worked as a staff writer for record companies such as EMI, Almo-Irving and Universal Music Publishing, according to EC associate music professor Jon Minei.

Stolpe has co-wrote songs with music artists such as Faith Hill, Julianne Hough, Daniel Lee Martin and others. Stolpe is also the author of a book called “Popular Lyric Writing: 10 Steps to Effective Storytelling,” Minei said.

Six of El Camino’s best songwriting students (past and present) will present and perform an original song in front of Stolpe. She will then give her critique on the song and give recommendations on how the student can improve the song. The student will even perform the improved version of the song in front of Stolpe, Minei said.

The class will be held in the choir room of the music building on April 5 from 5:30-8 p.m.
