Jeers at the referee coincided with the final whistle, as both teams showed their frustrations after a physical game ended in a 1-1 tie between the Warriors’ and East L.A. College’s men’s soccer teams.

The tie brings EC to a 1-6-4 record overall, and its conference record is now 0-1-3 in the South Coast conference.

The Warriors fell behind in the first half, but tied the game late when freshman forward Jorge Gutierrez’s shot deflected off the goalie and into the back of the net at the 83-minute mark.

Assistant Coach Darin Dunn was looking for a win, but saw an improvement in the team during the second half.

“I thought it was a lackluster first half,” Dunn said. “Our defense was alright and our midfield was okay, but we were disappointed with our forwards; they were kind of just standing around, and we had to talk to them about that at halftime.”

Dunn wanted his forwards to be more active, and he saw them respond “a little bit better” in the second half.

ELAC pressured the Warriors’ defense during the game, and had six shots on goal in total, with EC’s freshman keeper Larry Sanchez saving five of them.

The Huskies were tied for first in the South Coast Conference entering the game, and Dunn recognized ELAC’s Hugo Flores as their top player.

“He ran the show for them, winning every ball in the air, very good technically, moving the ball forward he was a very good player for them,” Dunn said.

The Warriors will match up with ELAC again on Nov. 3, but for now they look forward to their next match, which will be played at L.A. Harbor College on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
