The Social Justice Center organized a presentation for student’s and faculty to learn about sexual assault on April 14.
Candis Simmons-Davis was the speaker for the event and is the outreach specialist at the Young Women Committed to Action, which is a non-profit organization.
“Our mission is prevention and intervention of rape and sexual assault through community outreach,” Davis said.
Davis went on to explain that there are “misconceptions” of the situation known as “sexual assault.”
The public needs to be educated about all the related issues of rape and sexual assaults must be clearly defined, Simmons-Davis said. If there is no consent in the sexual relationship between partners, there is then one abuser and one victim of rape.
One of YWCAs goals is to raise public awareness about rape and sexual assault.
“Rape is not about sex and sexual needs or sexual gratification; it is about power and control of a twisted mind of the rapist,” Simmons-Davis said. “The abusers, often times, are close and trusted by the victims.”
In a power point presentation, statistics revealed one in four women and one in six men are the victims of rape in the United States and only six percent of rapists ever spend a day in jail.
Davis wanted it to be known, if anyone ever needs support there are many sources and places to go to or contact for help, such as: 1in6.org, RAIINN.org and 211.org.
