A group of students gathered in room 166 of the Distance Education building to watch “Black Indians: An American Story” on Feb. 12.
The film tells the untold story of Black Indians in America. It reveals records from as early as the 1800’s with names of people who were of Native American origins, but classified as either African American or Indian.
Later on in the film they discussed the issues some people had with identifying themselves as either African American or Black Indian during the 1980’s.
One student was able to relate to them and their struggle with identifying what racial background to claim though she is not of the same racial back ground as they are.
“I’m Colombian and Mexican. I don’t fit in with Mexicans, I don’t fit in with Colombians, and I don’t think I fit in with Americans either.” Sophomore, Rachel Davila said.
Though Rachel watched the film for extra credit she enjoyed watching it and felt it was educational.
Another student who wished to remain nameless called it “A very informal truth,” and also took something from it.
