Women’s basketball guard leading EC Warriors to best season in years

She’s a 5’6″ basketball player who likes to sing Jhene Aiko in her car. She knows all the lines to “Love and Basketball” and she likes to joke around with her friends and teammates.

In her second year playing for the EC women’s basketball Nisja Bass, 20, has helped the Warriors have a successful season with her skills and dedication.

“She’s is the steady force on the floor for us,” coach Steve Shaw said.”She really is unselfish and looks to get her teammates involved on the offensive end.”

Bass who graduated from Mayfair High School in 2012 grew up in Bellflower, California were she developed her skills and love of the game at an early age.

“I love the competition and just competing and getting better everyday,” Bass said.

Bass says that basketball has taught her many things but the one thing she has learned is how to control her frustration in tough game situations.

“She’s a really good point guard,” teammate Sydney Chase said. “She brings a lot of energy to our team.”

Her determination and focus in practice and in the game creates a dynamic for her to create plays not only for her but her teammates as well.

“She’s an absolute team player. She not out to get any kind of individual glory or recognition,” Shaw said.

Described as fun and energetic Bass and her teammate Sydney Chase call each other twin when they wear the same clothes have played together for a year.

“She’s just really funny and has a good sense of humor and I just love being around her,” Chase said.

She is a avid Lakers fan and looks to players like Kobe Bryant, Nick Young, Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker for inspiration.

Bass said she watches these athletes and tries to adapt the way they compete and put it into her own style of play.

With the season winding down she looks to a life after EC. In the future she would like to study Kinesiology at Cal State University Long Beach.

“I really wanna do like physically therapy so hopefully I could work as a physical therapist and I always wanted to coach too,” Bass said.

Bass would also like go back to her high school and become a coach for either the junior varsity (j.v) or the varsity team.
