During the last seven years, social media has taken a rise in how people not only communicate, but in how people judge one another; anyone with a Facebook or Twitter account knows this.

Ever since the growing of Facebook and the lack of privacy thanks to the NSA (National Security Agency), any information individuals have posted up on Facebook or any other social media site now has the chance to come back to haunt them in their personal lives.

“It’s always a good idea to self-edit and watch what you say on the Internet.” Clifford Felix, 28, nursing major, said. “You don’t know who is watching or recording it. I say if you really want to write out your aggression, do it old school and purchase a journal log.”

People, young and old, are losing job opportunities and some are even losing their jobs because of statuses and pictures they’ve posted online.

“I think if someone is getting fired or loses an opportunity for things they post on Facebook, it’s a form of prejudice,” Tara Harris, 22, film major, said. “People are just being themselves.”

On Device Research recently did a study and found that one in 10 people lose a job opportunity because of a picture or status they had posted on a social media site.

Everyone who answered the survey ranged from ages 16 to 34. Fortunately for young people in the United States, only 15 percent of those polled had lost a job opportunity while 30 percent of those in China polled have had the misfortune happen to them.

The only solution to completely avoid this lack of privacy as of now is to refrain from having a social media profile in the first place.
