Volleyball places Third
With a chance to move into the championship match Saturday night, the Warriors fell just short in the fifth game of its match with Pierce College, 16-14.
The team finished third in the San Diego Mesa Tournament after rebounding to defeat Eastern Arizona, 23-25,25-21,25-16 and 27-25.
Ashleigh Gideon, captain, was a member of the all-tournament team after putting away 48 kills and putting up 52 digs.
“I felt as if it was reassurance that I am doing my job as one of the returning sophomores and captains this year,” Gideon said.
The team begins its conference schedule Oct. 1 against Long Beach City College at 6 p.m. at home.
Along with Gideon”s strong performance, this weekend showcased freshmen twins, Lauren and Kaitlyn Edwards.
Kaitlyn had her best performance pokies online of the season with a team-high 50 kills; Lauren contributed 36 kills, 12 digs and five blocks.
“Lauren and Kaitlyn are a huge breath of fresh air this year,” Gideon said. “There is never any doubt that they are giving 100 percent during every play. It”s nice to know I can always have confidence in them.”
Lauren and Kaitlyn are aware that they are being counted on to provide support for a team that only has three players from last year”s team.
“They are just getting better and better everyday,” Le Valley Pattison, coach, said. “It”s important because they are two key positions in the offense.”
Competition is in full swing when it comes to the Edwards sisters.
“We”re always competing. I want more kills than her and vice versa,” Lauren said.
Sarah McFadden, dished out 104 assists this weekend.
“All the freshmen have done a good job,” Pattison said.
“They”ve transitioned from high school and picked up the speed at the college level very well,” she said.
The Warriors improved their record to 8-2 for the year. Before facing Fullerton the volleyball team is still working on unforced errors.
“We”re really trying to work on limiting unforced errors,” Pattison said.
