Every game has been a sweep for the Warriors, it didn’t matter if they won or lost. The El Camino women’s volleyball team was 7-1 heading into the semifinals of the Cerritos Falcon Tournament.
When EC came out flat and were quickly cast aside in a set-one loss, the team was looking to break the trend of sweeps.
The Mira Costa College Spartans on the other hand, weren’t going to back down. Sophomore libero Cadie Francis, who made it all the way to the individual pairs state tournament for beach volleyball, played outstanding defense.
The Spartans would eventually outlast the Warriors 3-1 in sets (25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 25-) in the semifinals on Saturday.
“I think this weekend, we learned a lot,” sophomore opposite Taylor Brydon said. “Mira Costa was a good team, we played a lot of them. This is a (match) that sucks to lose this. I feel like it’s good to lose this early, because we have so much more to learn.”
Learning from this loss would be something that the women should take as seriously as the stats.
Every match leading up to the loss against Mira Costa was a sweep. In seven wins and one loss, the Warriors have not played anything but three-set matches, meaning the fourth and fifth set was unknown territory for the freshmen on the team.
“We learned how to fight and not give up,” sophomore libero Brooklyn Rubio said. “We have a lot of younger (women) starting on the court this year, so I thought they did a good job of taking this as a challenge.”
Although the team failed to win the tournament, or even make the finals match as they did in 2015, the team has a lot to look forward to.
“I’m super proud of what (the team did),” head coach Le Valley Pattison said. “We’re young (as a team). The growth potential with the team is huge. I don’t feel like we’re even close to where we’re going to end up.”
The Warriors will host Grossmont College and San Diego Mesa College in a three-team mini tournament next Friday in the South Gym
at El Camino. Matches begin at 11 a.m.
