Volleyball team dominates game with Cerritos

With two difficult away games coming up, the women’s volleyball team looks to keep its undefeated season going next week.

The Warriors have tough games at Long Beach and at Mt. San Antonio College next week and will work to raise their No. 3 ranking in the state.

“We’re flattered, but we still have a lot of work to do,” assistant coach Richard Blount said with regards to their high ranking.

The team will travel to Long Beach on Friday and play the No. 6 ranked Vikings.

“It’s noisier, and dirtier than our gym, and it’s a hostile environment,” Blount said.

“Their gym is extremely small and their are a lot of hecklers,” Amie Abad said. “We didn’t let them get in our heads last year.”

Despite the different environment on the road, Jessica Juarez said she isn’t afraid of the hostile crowd at Long Beach.

The players are ready to take on the challenge that is involved with facing the Vikings.

“They should be a strong team.” Juarez said. “They have consistent hitters and they are a well-rounded team; it should be a good game.”

Others agree that Long Beach looks to be the next best team in the South Coast Conference.

“We have been preparing all week to play them, they are good,” Abad said. “They have good hitters and they are a consistent team.”

The Warriors swept Cerritos three games to none on Friday in the South Gym during a game in which the team displayed a strong sense of communication.

“Everyone contributed to the win,” Blount said.

The team played all 15 of its members.

“We have fifteen starters, not six.” Juarez said.

The team was lead by Amber Chisholm who had 13 kills, followed by Timary More and Bev Hazell, who each had 11 kills.

“We were able to play strong together,” Lauren Taylor said.

The Warriors had a game against East L.A. yesterday, but scores were not available by press time.

Team members said they have a strong chance to beat East L.A.

“We expect to be able to play all fifteen starters,” Juarez said.

“We are more experienced than East L.A.,” Abad said. “They are better than last year, but I’m not afraid of them.”

“I think they’re going to be scrappy,” Lauren Taylor said. “We are looking ahead to Long Beach.”
