Students got the chance to meet industry professionals, explore volunteer and internship opportunities and gain a firsthand understanding of workplaces from healthcare to human resources during the fall Internship and Volunteer Fair.
El Camino College’s Career Services hosted the Internship and Volunteer Fair in the Schauerman Library Collaboration Room from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Typically, the annual Job Fair is held during the spring semester. The event was originally planned to be held in the East Dining Room, but was moved due to the closure of the Bookstore building.
“This is the first time we’re doing an internship! Job fairs are annual and [held] during the spring time,” Adrian Delgado, a job placement specialist at ECC, said.
Representatives from 16 organizations including UCLA Heath, PV Magazine and Rise Real Estate were at the event to connect attendees with internship, job and volunteer opportunities.

Career counselor Sherece Jefferson explained that the overall goal of the Internship and Volunteer Fair is “to bring students together who don’t have experience [and] who are interested in exploring different career paths.”
This exposure can help students gain confidence about whether they want to stick with their current major or explore new directions.
Students could connect with employers and organizations from industries including marine biology, healthcare, construction and real estate to learn about different opportunities that strengthen their skills.

Jefferson advises students who couldn’t attend the fair, but who are still looking for work opportunities, “to reach out to the Career Services Center so they can be connected with their career path, major and industry.”
“We have more workshops and events coming down the line or you can meet one-on-one with some of the staff and faculty members. We have career counselors that help you choose a major,” she said.
Students are then able to learn more with the help and assistance that ECC provides, which elevates and prepares them for their future careers.
“The school just provided a lot of opportunities and resources for our students and for people that need it,” Hernandez said.
