Two teens arrested for allegedly killing El Camino student
Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested for the shooting that killed El Camino student Kody Cook last month in Gardena, police stated today in a press release.
One of the boys is being charged with the killing of Cook and the other boy is being charged as an accessory to the crime.
The two teens were arrested on July 2 after an investigation revealed that the two teens were involved in a non-violent confrontation in a nearby neighborhood with Cook earlier that afternoon, according to the press release.
“Shortly prior to the shooting, the victim and some of his friends exchanged angry words with another group of young people in the neighborhood,” the press release said. “After the verbal exchange the victim drove away.”
Cook drove to the Baskin-Robbins ice cream store at 135th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard and about 15-20 minutes later, Cook and a friend were sitting in his gray BMW when confronted by the two teens from the previous confrontation, one who had a small-caliber semi-automatic handgun, according to the press release.
“The suspect then fired multiple rounds into the vehicle striking the victim,” the press release said. “The two suspects then ran to a vehicle and fled the scene.”
Gardena police found Cook dead in the driver’s seat of his gray BMW.
On Monday, Gardena detectives presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office in Inglewood for filing.
The names of the two teens were not released due to their age.
