Paramedics respond to incident in Humanities Building
French class in the Humanities Building was ended prematurely today at 1:40 p.m. when paramedics responded to a call about a student with a medical problem.
“They (paramedics) needed to get the glucose into him,” Jasmine Pelayo, a student in class at the time of the incident, said. “He was conscious and breathing, but not completely alert.”
The student’s condition hasn’t been confirmed, but witnesses believe it was related to blood sugar.
“He was having an insulin reaction,” Veronica Wagner, another student witness in class, said. “He fell over the desk, and the professor continued to try to talk to him to keep him conscious. If he passed out it would have been worse.”
Professor Evelyn Berman, who was teaching French the time, acted calmly to keep the situation under control.
“I had a student that was not feeling well, so we had to call the paramedics,” Berman said. “I was trying to comfort him and help him breathe until the police came.”
This wasn’t Berman’s first experience having to help a student in need.
“I’m sad to report, but I’ve been here a long time, and sometimes you do get students who have health issues,” Berman said. “The semester before, I had a student who fell by my office due to a spinal injury. She fell, but she didn’t hurt herself. I just helped her, and waited with her until she got up. It does happen.”
