Recent resignations has caused a
special election on March 10 and 11
resulting in Christopher Pham be-
coming the new student trustee.
Jose Iglesias, vice president of
the Associated Students Organiza-
tion and special elections coordina-
tor said that they had a bigger turn
out than expected, considering this
was a special election and there were
only two candidates.
ASO holds a general election ev-
ery spring semester where students
may run for a position in the stu-
dent government.
Iglesias said that he does not
think that in the history of ASO
there has ever been two special elec-
tions to fill the student trustee posi-
tion in one school year.
The student trustee that was
elected, David Nordel, who was also
a former ASO president, vacated his
position from ASO and the board
of trustees without notice. A special
election was held before the end
of the fall semester; however the
elected student, Lisa Brown, was
ineligible and could not continue as
student trustee.
“This is one for the record books,”
said.
“The student trustee position
is the only position that the ASO
president cannot appoint, therefore
we had to have a special election in
order to fill the vacant spot,” Iglesias
said.
This position is important be-
cause the board of trustees ulti-
mately vote on policies that affect
the student body as a whole, Iglesias
said.
Due to the student trustee poli-
cies that are implemented concerns
of the students are discussed thor-
oughly.
In order to become a candidate
for student trustee, students must
maintain a minimum of seven units,
have a GPA of 2.5 or better in past
and present classes, have completed
no more than five semesters or three
academic years of service in the stu-
dent government, and must be a le-
gal resident of California.
According to the EC special
elections notices, the student trust-
ee has a responsibility to present
monthly board updates to the ASO
Senate, to serve as acting president
in the absence of both the president
and vice president, and to attend the
board of trustee meetings.
The board meetings are open
to the public and held every third
Monday in the board from room
inside the Administration Building.
Students are encouraged to attend
if they have questions or concerns
they would like to have heard.
Anyone involved in ASO is here
for the students, Iglesias said.
The general election is coming
soon and students are encouraged to
visit the EC Web site to find more
information on events, vacant posi-
tions, and the guidelines that ASO
abides by.
Students may also visit the ASO
offices in the Activities Center.
