A current L.A. Times reporter and El Camino alum spoke to students during a journalism 12 mass media course Tuesday night about his journey as an up and coming journalist.
Former EC student and California State University of Fullerton graduate, Jeremiah Dobruck, 27, is a safety reporter for the Los Angeles Times community news The Daily Pilot in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
Dobruck explained to students that over the years news has adapted to correspond with the up coming generation and the social media wave coming up with us.
“You may not know it, but you are who newspapers are aiming to reach,” he said. “Papers are more focused on what will get them the most clicks online.”
Dobruck ended his address to the students strongly suggesting they learn another trade outside of journalism to give themselves a leg up.
“Learn something else too,” said Dobruck, “Major in economics, business, be an expert at something, so when they look at your application they can say ‘hey this person actually knows about something.'”
