El Camino College’s athletics program has hired a new women’s basketball coach, Megan Hanson, who is the fifth coach to be hired since the program was started in 1977-1978.
Hanson was officially hired at ECC in July 2025.
“I chose El Camino because of its rich history and success, the amazing facilities, and all the amazing people I kept hearing about,” she said.
Her journey began at Cypress College, where she played junior college basketball and was recognized as the California Community College Athletic Association Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2013-2014.
Hanson was recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury in high school.
“I had two knee surgeries in the same year, so I had to do a red shirt year at the junior college level,” Hanson said.
Despite the surgeries she earned an Orange Empire Confrence Character Council Award.
After transferring to University of California, Los Angeles, Hanson earned her master’s in psychology and later worked in education in the San Francisco Unified School District for a few years.
Having years of experience in the education system, including positions in San Francisco Unified and Newport-Mesa Unified, Hanson combined her passion for student development with a deep understanding of the game.
She later joined the coaching staff at Sage Hill under leadership of coach Kerwin Walters, winning the California Interscholastic Federation Division 1 Southern Section Regional Championship, and helped the team reach the CIF State Championship at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
