For the quiet observers, homebodies, and bashful animal lovers, here are five cat breeds to suit your introverted needs.
Cats come in all kinds of fur patterns and paw print sizes, and sometimes you can pinpoint consistent personality traits across different breeds. Orange Tabbies are known for their bright and chaotic nature, while Maine Coons are known to be more gentle and laid back.
Introverts, with their introspective and solitude-loving nature, may want a catty companion that meshes well with their personality. Four in 10 Americans — nearly half — report being completely or mostly introverted, according to YouGov.com.
Board of Directors President Christine Lugo with the Peter Zippi Memorial Fund Inc., a no-kill animal rescue organization, discusses cat breeds known for their balanced temperament and introvert-friendly personalities.
1. Persians
Lugo says that when looking for a specific cat, especially for cats that act as emotional support animals, it’s important to prioritize a cat with a calm personality, and Persians fit the description.
“They’re quite, gentle, calm,” Lugo said. “They love sitting with you, and they are generally kind of low energy.”
Persians may not be as independent as other cats, and you may find your Persian content with quality time for an extended period of time, Lugo said.
2. Rag Dolls
If you ever get the lucky chance to hold a Rag Doll cat, you’ll see where they get their name from. They have this habit of going limp in your arms, hanging from your hold like a worn-out rag doll.
Rag Dolls are calm, easy-going, and good with people, Lugo said. They tend to stick to their owners and loved ones like Velcro, following you around with dog-like attention. For the clingy, anxiety-ridden introverts, Rag Dolls can be a good option for emotional support.
3. Maine Coons
“Another cat that’s known to be really friendly and social are Maine Coons,” Lugo said.
They have this big presence, due to their physical size, but they are gentle. They can be described as dog-like in that sense. Their inherent gentle nature makes them well-suited to an introvert’s personality. This energy can bring ease into your life and a fluffy friend to cuddle for hours.
4. Siamese
Siamese cats are highly social, known for being vocal and interactive, which can suit any introvert looking to get away from human interaction and more into feline interaction. Besides, being introverted does not mean being antisocial.
“They’re known for really bonding with a particular person, but they are definitely more active,” Lugo said.
5. Sphynx
Sphynx cats are another contender in this lineup and they’re widely recognized for their hairless bodies and high-maintenance grooming routines.
They are inquisitive, intelligent and friendly, according to an article on the breed from The International Cat Association, a genetic registry for cats and household pets. Like Rag Dolls, Sphynx cats are clingy companions, but Sphynx can also spend a lot of time entertaining themselves.
Many cats are prone to heart problems. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a heart disease that impacts a variety of cat breeds, but is “poorly described in the Sphynx”, according to an article highlighting the impact of this disease on Sphynx cats.
Lugo considers breeding somewhat irresponsible if you participate, knowing that certain breeds are prone to certain issues. Working with stray cats, Lugo is well aware of the overpopulation crisis, and she believes breeding contributes to it.
“If people are able to go out and buy a specific breed, the cats in the shelters will languish,” Lugo said. “And a lot of actual, you know, pure-breed cats end up getting turned into the shelter.”
