Chris Mello to perform jazz concert Saturday

Jazz music with a mixture of world rhythms and contemporary pop will be featured at “Music of Metheny,” which will take place on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Marsee Auditorium.

Chris Mello, guitar instructor, will perform in celebration of  guitarist Pat Metheny.

“We are celebrating his music,” Mello said. “We are playing the music that he has composed.”

Mello said that Metheny inspired him to play guitar, and helped expose him to different types of jazz music.

“This inspired me to create my own music,” Mello said. “His style allowed me to realize that there is no limit to music.”

Mello said that the band performing with him was contracted in early August, and that he has spent most of his time on campus preparing and practicing for the performance.

Some students, who have taken classes with Mello, said the performance will be an opportunity for students on campus to encounter something different from the music they hear everyday.

“He is very passionate about his music and he is a great performer,” Matt Hall, 31, music major, said. “He holds a high standard for his music and always seems to have a great group of musicians with him.”

Carlton Brooks, 23, music major, said that students should go to the performance if they have an interest in music. He said if a student aspires to become a professional performer, they should come and observe how the performers work together.

“I would love our students to come and visit the Center for the Arts,” Mello said. “I can’t think of anywhere else that will allow people to watch professional performers for ten dollars.”
