Students gathered into the Activites Center quad for Associated Students Organization and Society of Music’s holiday canned food drive and concert said Jack Ryan of the Society of Music.
Associated Students Organization (A.S.O.) and Society of Music (S.O.M.) collected many cans to donate to the L.A. Food Bank throughout the concert they hosted last Tuesday.
Canned food was also collected throughout the week, where boxes were placed in the Activities Center and the music library.
The event enabled us to bring attention to the clubs, the musicians and the canned food drive as well as the L.A. Food Bank said Herbert Munoz, music major, 21, of S.O.M.
We faced some difficulties when trying to set up the concert because construction moved in front of the activities center stage unannounced, we were notified that our event would be moved to the quad then media services didn’t set up the P.A. system until 1p.m. when our event was supposed to start at 12 p.m aid Erika Maldonado of A.S.O. and S.O.M.
The musicians consisted of different S.OM. members that traded off instruments and at one point traded off singers, where Maldonado sang her version of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Cry Me a River”.
“This event brought awareness to the music program that has and is facing cuts,” said Ryan.
The event was put on for many reason apart from the canned food drive that brought all the causes together, including awareness of the program and appreciation for music in general.
“I never hear anything about music on campus, everythings about business or nursing, I wanted to play a part in bringing music on campus,” said Munoz.
“The event definitely lived up to our visions,” said Maldonado of the event that was prepared within two weeks.
