The costume shop has been around for almost as long as the college has been in existence. Costume shop manager Kim DeShazo Wilkinson works with set designers and production directors to create wardrobe for featured campus productions.
Most of the patterns and designs are created on campus, but sometimes outside stitchers come in to lend a helping hand. Costuming a production takes about six weeks and can produce 20 individual costumes. A single dress can take up to a week to create.
The costume shop not only provides costumes but also utilizes theater sales, donations and other colleges and universities like Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine when acquiring new pieces.
Wilkinson also teaches the Costuming On Stage class on campus. In this class, one can learn about the history, drawing, rendering and sewing techniques of costuming. Students also aid in the hemming process when needed.
The costume shop is currently working on pieces for next months dance production “Tempo.” Around 20 to 25 costumes are being created for this show. “Tempo” will be at the Campus Theatre from Dec. 3-6.
